Canon, Nikon or Sony ?

I wanna buy a SLR camera but I'm not sure which one is the best one for my needs. I went to a shop last week and they told me the best characteristic of each one. Sharing with you:
  • Canon: better for pictures of movements like in sports, streets, shows, etc.
  • Nikon: better for pictures of no movements or quiet moments like landscape, family, monuments, etc.
  • Sony: technically inferior to the above ones but good for dummies, who are starting in the art of photography.
For a moment I thought the guy was trying to sell me all three models because I want to take all kinds of pictures and do it in an easy way.

Since I'm a beginner, I'm inclined to choose the Sony Alfa 330, which has a good price at the moment. Sony implements lots of image processing internally, enhancing the picture's colors, luminosity and other details, but distorting the reality. Nikon and Canon take shots of the reality, but they demand some expertise in photography to make the pictures look great.

Do you have some knowledge about them? Share it here. ;-)

  1. Here I am! :-)
About one year ago I was struggled by the same question: Canon or Nikon reflex? My technologist heart drove me to read quite everything in forums, web sites, ecc...
At the end I've choosen a Canon 450D (Xsi) over a Nikon D60 (one year ago, now they are "obsolete").
I'm not able to tell something about Sony because I've never tried one, so, my opinion is:

    - Canon or Nikon, they both make great stuff.
    - Canon rebel series and Nikon Dxxxx series are equivalent, differences for me are in: Nikon Dxxxx look & feel is better. Canon Autofocus is faster. At the moment Nikon High ISO performance seems to be a little better.
    - They are both capable to take great pictures
    - don't choose by megapixels. For me 12 Mpx are enough.
    - Try them yourself and go to evaluate some different opinions in qualified shops.
    - Usually kit lens are only a starting point with average quality, if you can buy the body and choose another flexible zoom.
    - Go to flickr and search for SOOC (Straight Out of the Camera) or similar groups and compare images.
    - Canon or Nikon: great stuff but YOU have the burden to take great pictures :-)
    - if you go for a reflex, you have to study a little :-) in order to get good results (you can use AUTO mode...yes, but it isn't so funny...)

Take a look to my flickr photostream, photos are taken with the Canon 450D with the 18-55 IS kit lens: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pintux

Let me know which Canon and Nikon models you are evaluating...

    Ciao,
